LAHORE: Students from various major institutions of the city were arrested by police on Friday for holding a demonstration in opposition to the Islam Bachao rally held two days ago.
The students who belonged to major institutions within the city such as the Lahore University of Management Sciences, University of Engineering and Technology and Beaconhouse National University were holding a protest, called the Insan Bachao rally, to honour the memory of Salmaan Taseer at Liberty Chowk as a rebuttal to the Islam Bachao rally held to celebrate the politician’s death by members of the Sunni Tehreek, Tehreek-i-Khatme Nabuwat and Tehreek-i-Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah.
They also demonstrated peacefully against the police’s inaction against members of the Tahafuz Namoos-e-Risalat who were even given an exclusive route for their protest by the administration.
10 of the students, who held signs and placards bearing messages such as “Shame Shame Punjab police” and used loudspeakers to get their message of tolerance and equality across to onlookers and passersby were arrested by the police and taken to the Racecourse Police Station. No further update on their situation has been forthcoming so far.
